Design Challenge
When applying to Aurora, I was challenged to analyze and improve the Aurora Medical digital platform.
The goal was to uncover usability and accessibility issues and propose design solutions across desktop and mobile.
Scope of Work
Review the user journey for both desktop and mobile
Identify pain points and usability barriers
Redesign the blog experience for better readability and engagement
Create UI assets and promotional banners aligned with Aurora’s brand
Key Goals
Simplify navigation
Improve accessibility & inclusivity
Enhance readability across devices
Create a consistent, user-friendly interface

Process
Personas
I created two personas to reflect Aurora’s audience:
👩 Mary – Civil Veteran (Desktop User)
Struggles with readability due to visual impairments
Needs clear navigation and an accessible design
👨 Richard – Veteran (Mobile User)
Encounters loading errors on mobile
Gets lost in information overload
Wants quick, straightforward navigation
Pain Points Identified
💻 Desktop (Mary’s Journey)
Poor contrast and overwhelming banners
Misleading "Getting Started" label
Inconsistent fonts and hierarchy
No alt-text on images → SEO + accessibility issues
Reading level: 10th grade vs. recommended 6th
📱 Mobile (Richard’s Journey)
Products not loading → trust issues
The blog looks non-clickable
Text-centred, long scroll experience
The footer takes too much space
The search bar & cart are too small and crowded

Solution
Desktop Improvements
Added high-contrast toggle for accessibility
Renamed Getting Started → Discover & Explore
Simplified navigation with icons + categories
Reduced content reading level to 6th grade
Resized banners + consistent typography
Blog redesigned with categories, tags, author info, and pagination
Mobile Improvements
Exposed search bar for quick product discovery
Footer converted into accordion folds
Blog: 2-column grid, strong CTAs, clickable cards
Fixed loading errors flagged to the dev team
Logos displayed in carousel for space optimization
Asset Creation
Promotional Banners: Free Shipping, Rewards Program
UI Components: buttons, labels, icons
Consistent isotype and typography system

Outcome & Impact
This project demonstrated my ability to:
Identify real accessibility issues
Apply UX best practices to simplify navigation
Deliver design + content strategy solutions
Balance business goals (CTAs, promos, SEO) with user needs (clarity, inclusivity, trust)
💡 Outcome: My proposal stood out during the hiring process and directly helped me land my current position at Aurora Cannabis.
